Gatsas Georg___It Took The Night To Believe
„Dark“ lautete der Titel einer Gruppenausstellung 2005 im Rotterdamer Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, an der u.a. auch der 1978 geborene Georg Gatsas teilnahm. Den dunklen Seiten menschlicher Existenz nähert sich auch das Schaffen des in Zürich und vor allem in New York lebenden Künstlers in subtiler Weise: It Took The Night To Believe. Vor allem die Underground-Kunst- und Underground-Musikszene in Brooklyn verfolgt Gatsas aus unmittelbarer Nähe – er ist zugleich integraler Teil davon – und porträtiert Künstler und Musiker in einer selten unverstellten Art. Ausgangspunkt für sein Schaffen ist die Faszination des Bildes, das Menschen von sich selbst machen und das sie durch Mode, Körperhaltung und Pose vermitteln. Ob das nun Persönlichkeiten wie Manon, Fabrice Gygi, Schorsch Kamerun, Ira Cohen oder Jim O‘Rourke sind, stets findet Georg Gatsas eindrückliche Bilder für sein Gegenüber, die sich in erfrischender Weise von üblichen Porträtdarstellungen unterscheiden und einen kulturellen Resonanzraum eröffnen, in dem zuweilen eine fremde (Underground-)Kultur in präzisen Fotosequenzen neu zum Leben erwacht.
Nach kleineren Einzelpräsentationen in der Neuen Kunst Halle St.Gallen und der Stiftung Binz 39 realisiert Georg Gatsas im o.T. Raum für aktuelle Kunst eine umfangreiche Dia-Show mit neuen Fotoserien, unterlegt mit einem Soundtrack von I.U.D. remixed von Norbert Möslang.
There is an element of self-portrait in every picture by Georg Gatsas. His photographs of landscapes and people give insight into his life and the artists and visual worlds that shape his practice.
His approach is in the spirit of Joseph Beuys’ concept of Social Sculpture, which says that art is all around us and implicates the people places and things that are in our environment as artistic co-conspirators. His subjects are often highly visually complex, his photographs capture a certain energy inherent in his subjects through color, composition and form. Often a lone figure in the night going places where few dare to go, Gatsas is the ultimate fly-on the wall;
easy going and constantly approaching the people and places that cross his path as major events, his strategy highlights the factthat history is written by those who care enough to observe, document and record.
